How this online fretboard note trainer works
- Pick what to practise: the low E and A strings, the open strings, one string, or all six strings across frets 0–12.
- A note appears. Tap where it is in the lit part of the neck. Any place with that note counts.
- Keep going. A right answer moves on by itself. After a miss, the right places are marked in green.
- See your round. After 20 notes you get your score, your typical answer time and the notes to work on.
It runs in your browser with no download required, so you can test your fretboard notes on a phone between songs or on a computer at your desk. Hold your phone upright for a vertical neck, or turn it sideways for the full neck.
Where to start
Start with the open strings (E, A, D, G, B, E), then the low E and A strings: the root notes of most barre chords and power chords sit there. After that, take one string at a time before mixing all six. Stay on natural notes until they come without counting frets, then turn on sharps and flats in the settings. If you need to look a note up first, keep a guitar fretboard notes chart open beside you.

Do I need a guitar?
No. The trainer builds note recall, so you can practise anywhere. Leave the sound on to hear each note you tap, and play it on your guitar when you have one nearby.
Why only frets 0 to 12?
Frets 13 to 24 repeat frets 1 to 12 an octave higher, so once the first 12 frets are quick, the rest of the neck follows.
